Hanging Teardrop Chair with a Freestanding Stand in Kubu Grey Rattan
Details
A teardrop rather than an egg, which is more open, less like sitting inside a basket and considerably easier to get out of.
Every piece here is woven by hand, which is not a marketing line but a description of the only way it can be done. Rattan cannot be machine woven around a curve, so a chair back is somebody sitting with a former and a bundle of soaked cane for most of a day. The consequence is that no two pieces are identical, that the binding at the joints varies slightly, and that a weave that is perfectly regular is usually a sign of extruded plastic rather than good workmanship.
Specification
- Dimensions: 950mm across the chair, stand 1050 by 1100 by 1950mm high
- Seat or working height: seat sits at about 550mm and swings 200mm either way
- Frame: woven rattan basket on a powder coated steel stand, 40mm tube
- Weave: hand woven, close weave on the deck
- Finish: rattan soaked in a natural clay wash before weaving, which gives the soft grey that people spend a lot of money trying to fake with paint
- Load rating: tested to 150kg with a 3 to 1 safety factor
- Indoor or outdoor: Indoors, or a covered veranda or conservatory that stays dry. Natural rattan is not garden furniture and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a chair that will go grey, swell, split and unravel inside two seasons. If you want rattan outdoors you want woven polyethylene, which is a good product honestly described and something we do not sell.
- Assembly: Flat packed to keep the delivery sensible, about an hour with the spanner in the box. Frame joints are bolted through steel inserts, and the woven panels arrive already woven onto their frames rather than as something you have to assemble.
- Weight: approximately 45.0 kilograms
- Cushion: 120mm seat pad and two scatter cushions
- Ceiling height: not needed, the stand is freestanding
- Stand footprint: 1050 by 1100mm, and it does need that much
- Floor: a point load of about 40kg per foot, fine on a joisted floor
- Covers washable at 30 degrees

Care
Covers come off and wash at 30 degrees on a gentle cycle. Do not tumble dry linen, put it back on the pad slightly damp and let it dry into shape, which is the trick that stops linen covers shrinking away from the corners.
Where it works
The boho end of the range, which mostly means texture. A woven piece next to a plain one reads as considered and three woven pieces in a row read as a garden centre, so the rule we give people is one large woven piece per wall and as many small ones as you like. Works particularly well against a dark wall, where the light catches the weave and the piece stops disappearing.
